Did you know that speed-walking is better than jogging? Especially for those who are out of shape, and who are a little bit overweight. It is also called race-walking, so don`t get confused.

This activity increases caloric burn rate without the joint-jarring effects of jogging. The number of calories burned during a speed-walking workout depends on such factors as your weight, the length of your workout, the pace of your walk and how vigorously you swing your arms. (You have to swing your arms while you’re doing this kind of exercise.) Heavier people burn more calories per hour no matter what activity they are engaged in; lighter people burn fewer. Another way to burn more calories is to speed walk on hilly terrain or on an inclined treadmill.

Here is a video explanation for you:

Speed walking several times a week has manifold advantages. One study showed that women who walked one to three hours a week were 30 percent less likely to develop heart disease or suffer a heart attack compared with sedentary women. Walking five or more hours a week reduced the risk of heart problems by more than 40 percent. Another advantage is lower injury rate. It also provides stress-relief and other psychological benefits. Plus- you don’t need a partner or a team. All you need is a pair of comfortable walking shoes and a place to walk – a park, track, treadmill, the local mall or your own neighborhood. So, what are you waiting for?!
