The Health Benefits of Strawberries

These days I feel like eating strawberries, and only strawberries. Fresh or frozen, fruit salads with a lot of strawberries, strawberries and yoghurt… if I could, I’d put them in my soup :-)

I’ve always loved them, but it seems they never suited me like presently. Maybe because of pregnancy, I can’t explain it otherwise. But they are very healthy, plus- very low-caloric, so I don’t worry about eating them too much. For those who want to lose weight, strawberries are excellent.

strawberries-2A portion of 100g has ONLY 32 kcal. This excellent source of vitamin C provides us with 140% of our daily requirement in only one cup. They contain vitamin K, vitamin A, B group vitamins- B3 and B5. Also, they contain folic acid, which is essential during the first 4 months of pregnancy. As far as minerals are concerned, they are packed with them! Calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, and many others. Also, they almost do not have lipids (0.3g per 100g). The same goes for carbohydrates (7.68g per 100g), which is really nothing in comparison to their awesome taste, and sweetness. They are a very good source of dietary fiber with almost 4 grams per serving.

Because of phenol, which they contain, strawberries are potent antioxidants and help protect cell structure damage and prevent oxygen damage in the organs. The phenol content in them can lessen inflammation associated with arthritis, asthma, heart problems and even cancer. Then, flavonoids found in this fruit can prevent LDL cholesterol from oxidizing and damaging artery walls by creating arterial clogs. And as you may already know, flavonoids are antioxidants.

So, to be healthy, fit, and young- include this wonderful fruit in your daily menu.
