Speed-Walking Better Than Jogging

speed-walkingI’m doing great! This spring-cleaning of the organism really works. After 4 days, I feel awesome and I intend to continue with it. So, instead of one, I’ll do it for two weeks. I will be skipping my aerobics during that period since I’ve been diagnosed with dust allergy, and it’s impossible to jump and do my sit-ups in a gym with 20 other girls. Instead of my aerobics, I’ll have to do something else.

Today I was riding my bike for half an hour, and after that I was doing sit-ups, waist twists, and few more exercises for another half an hour. That’s an hour of physical exercise, plus I did my shopping on foot! I went to the local grocery and bought fresh fruits and vegetables for my healthy meal, and I even caught some tan out in the sun :-) This walk was great leg-exercise, especially because I walked really fast. Did you know that speed-walking is better than jogging? Especially for those who are out of shape, and who are a little bit overweight.

This activity increases caloric burn rate without the joint-jarring effects of jogging. The number of calories burned during a speed-walking workout depends on such factors as your weight, the length of your workout, the pace of your walk and how vigorously you swing your arms. (You have to swing your arms while you’re doing this kind of exercise.) Heavier people burn more calories per hour no matter what activity they are engaged in; lighter people burn fewer. Another way to burn more calories is to speed walk on hilly terrain or on an inclined treadmill.

Speed walking several times a week has manifold advantages. One study showed that women who walked one to three hours a week were 30 percent less likely to develop heart disease or suffer a heart attack compared with sedentary women. Walking five or more hours a week reduced the risk of heart problems by more than 40 percent. Another advantage is lower injury rate. It also provides stress-relief and other psychological benefits. Plus- you don’t need a partner or a team. All you need is a pair of comfortable walking shoes and a place to walk – a park, track, treadmill, the local mall or your own neighborhood. So, what are you waiting for?!

I hate running! I know it’s good for you, but it tires me out. Just not for me. I’ll take speed walking over light jogging any day!

That’s ok. We all have to find the best way of exercising for ourselves, something that we CAN do regularly. Some of us run, others speed walk, and some go to gym. The point is to find something that suits you, something that you do enjoy in, and results must be evident!
